Decades of Effort to Create A Park for All!

Friends of Missoula Parks is proud to sponsor the Friends of Marshall Mountain (FoMM). FoMM was instrumental in assisting the City of Missoula and Missoula County secure three 160-acre parcels at Marshall Mountain to create a 480-acre public park for all. In October 2023, the City and County each approved $1M in open space funds for the acquisition and initial improvements at the old Marshall Ski Area base. Thanks to the City’s Parks and Recreation department, a master planning process helped lead the County in its visioning efforts at Marshall Mountain. Marshall Mountain Park is now open for the public benefit, with phased development planned for years. FoMM’s efforts pivoted to assist the county in acquiring private donations and grants to fulfill the master plan.

What’s Next?

  • Missoula County hired both a park manager and a park ranger to lead planning and development efforts. With a strong coalition of partners, such as Run Wild Missoula, Missoula Mountain Bike Coalition, and Friends of Missoula Parks, trail development, conservation projects, and youth outdoor education programs are already underway.

  • FoMM is conducting a capital campaign to raise $1.5 million for programming and devlopment.
